The Repair Before & After Spotlight Series
My Jewelry Repair aims to provide our customers with the highest caliber of jewelry and watch repair all from the comfort of their home. The Before & After Series spotlights some of the best work our Master Craftsmen have done!
The Restoration of a Vintage LeCoultre Watch
We received a vintage LeCoultre Master Mariner watch accompanied by a note from the owner stating that ‘the part that rewinds the watch is not working’ and that their jeweler ‘advised that they no longer make the part.’ Upon evaluation, we informed the owner that due to the age and condition of the piece, we cannot guarantee spare part availability or water resistance. Fortunately, we were able to restore the vintage timepiece to its working condition and make it look cosmetically pristine once again.
If you’re an avid reader of our before & after blog series, you most likely already know that we delve into the details of each repair spotlight.
The process began with its physical evaluation by our skilled craftsmen, followed by disassembly, and servicing each appropriate part as required.
The dial was professionally refinished by our authorized partner, Kirk Rich Dial, and its automatic mechanical movement underwent a cleaning and overhaul by our Certified Watchmakers. After reassembly, the watch was monitored for 72 hours by our Quality Assurance Team to ensure proper function.
Every timepiece that enters our secure facility receives this level of attentive care, and we strive to be transparent about what happens in our repair spotlights. Moreover, we’re excited to share more about the story behind the actual brand of the watch, especially now that our new authorized partnership with Jaeger-LeCoultre has piqued our interest.
The History of Jaeger-LeCoultre
In 1833, the seeds of a horological legacy were sown by Antoine LeCoultre in the Vallée de Joux, Switzerland, marking the birth of a brand that would become synonymous with precision and luxury watchmaking.
Transforming a modest family barn into a workshop, Antoine embarked on a journey driven by his fascination with accuracy and the measurement of time. His inventive spirit led to the creation of groundbreaking tools and mechanisms, including the Millionomètre in 1844, which set new standards for precision in timekeeping.
Antoine’s vision extended beyond mere innovation; in 1866, he and his son Elie founded LeCoultre & Cie., establishing the Vallée de Joux’s first full-fledged manufacture. This venture not only centralized the expertise of their craftsmen under one roof but also led to the development of the first partially mechanized production processes for complicated movements.
By the early 20th century, LeCoultre & Cie. had evolved into a cornerstone of the watchmaking industry, known for its vast array of calibres and its role as a primary movement supplier to other prestigious brands.
The transformation from LeCoultre to Jaeger-LeCoultre was heralded by the collaboration between Jacques-David LeCoultre, Antoine’s grandson, and the French watchmaker Edmond Jaeger. In 1903, this partnership began with a challenge to produce ultra-thin movements, a task that LeCoultre accepted with enthusiasm. This alliance not only led to the creation of the world’s thinnest pocket watch in 1907 but also paved the way for a series of innovations and exclusive agreements, including the famous contract with Cartier.
The synergy between Jaeger’s inventive genius and LeCoultre’s manufacturing prowess culminated in 1937 with the official renaming of the company to Jaeger-LeCoultre. This marked a new era for the brand, which continued to innovate with creations like the Atmos clock, and solidified its reputation as a leading manufacturer of luxury timepieces.
Despite challenges and changes over the decades, including the complex dynamics of the American market, Jaeger-LeCoultre has remained a beacon of excellence and innovation in the watchmaking world, embodying the pioneering spirit of its founders while continuing to push the boundaries of horological art and craftsmanship.
